In an effort to create awareness on the importance of blood donation and help the public better understand organ donation, Vijayaratnam Foundation, the philanthropic arm of QI Group in Malaysia, organised a Blood Donation drive and Organ Pledge campaign at Nu Sentral, Kuala Lumpur on 24 and 25 February. A total of 85 volunteers assisted with the event, which was also supported by QNET Malaysia.

The donation drive, in collaboration with the National Blood Centre and National Transplant Resource Centre, was held at Level 3, Nu Sentral shopping mall, from 10am to 4pm. The campaign received very encouraging support from staff and members of the public, with a total 119 blood donors and 67 organ pledges during the two days. Members of the public also tried out QNET health enhancing drinks such as Edge and learned more about QNET home care products such as HomePure.

Head of Vijayaratnam Foundation Jayamalar Samuel said the event was a good move to raise awareness on the importance of blood and organ donation. “We hope this initiative will encourage the public and our staff alike to step forward and join similar noble cause in the future.”

Hospitals, especially in the Klang Valley need around 2,000 pints of blood daily to treat 1,000 patients. However, blood donation awareness is still low, with just 2.2 per cent of the entire Malaysian population donating blood last year. According to a recent report, between 1997 and July last year, only 393,221 people or 1.2 per cent of the 32 million population in Malaysia have pledged to donate their organs.
