Studies have shown that being outside in nature makes people feel more alive. As such, the SSR Committee decided to do something fun and different this time around.
In conjunction with International Women’s Day this year, 30 QI Malaysia staff had a lovely picnic at the Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur with the senior ladies of Grace Home on Saturday morning, 25 March 2017. These ladies, who hardly have the chance to venture outside their Home, were taken to the park by chartered bus to enjoy nature and take advantage of the great weather. Since its establishment in 1980, the Home has been a refuge for more that 1,600 homeless, rejected and neglected women who have no one to turn to and no place to stay.
Our volunteers met at the Grace Home in Pandamaran, Klang and were each paired with a resident of the Home, ensuring that the volunteers were responsible for each resident throughout the morning. “Nothing helps us understand more about what is important in life than seeing others face struggles we do not. As we see what it is like to grow older, we must set our priorities in life and remember to spend time with the people who matter the most”, said volunteer, Roxanne Cabaluna from QVI.
Everyone had a wonderful time playing games, singing and dancing to music from the 50s and 60s. Before leaving the park, our volunteers and their new friends enjoyed refreshments and went for a walk around the park to enjoy the natural wonders of the outdoors. A resident of the Home, Joane Tan expressed her joy at being able to enjoy such a beautiful day. “I was so happy that I got to see the trees and wonderful lake. I am so happy to have made new friends. We sang songs and played games that were a lot of fun. I hope to do this again”, she said.
